Description

This was my first book and a true labor of love. I spent decades studying steam and the work of Dead Men, in both old buildings and on library shelves. I traveled the country, haunting used-book stores, looking for engineering books that held the answers to questions that nagged at me. I was obsessed with this topic, and when I finally sat to write, I poured all that I had learned into this book, and as I wrote, I tried my best to make the words sound good to you - like we were together and having a conversation. I wanted you to know what I know and I wanted you to be able to do what I can do when it comes to old steam systems. This book arrived in 1992 and has since gone though dozens of printings. We've sold it in every state as well as in foreign countries. Steam heat is everywhere there are old buildings, so why shouldn't you be the one with the answers?

Here's what readers have said about Dan Holohan's The Lost Art of Steam Heating:

"Eleven years ago, I bought an old brick house built in 1900. It had a steam system installed and I had no idea how to operate it....So in the first few months of ownership I managed to let the boiler run dry and the safety system didn't shut it down..... The boiler was ruined...cracked apart. I had very little money to hire in professionals. And, the few that did come out and try to patch the system, had no luck with it. A new boiler was mucho expensive, so I decided to look around for a used unit....even though I knew nothing about steam heating....I tried looking through any and every tech manual on HVAC for whatever information I could find....but, it was all very dry and technical, and assumed a lot of knowledge on my part. What a great day it was when my girlfriend came back from the public library with a copy of The Lost Art of Steam Heating! After reading that book from cover to cover a few times, I decided to tackle the job of installing a used Weil McClain boiler, all by myself. I was able to figure out that I had a two-pipe steam system, and the proper method for hooking up the replacement boiler. The system has been working like gang busters for eleven years... But, every time I've shown anyone my boiler installation, I've mentioned that there was this great, easy to understand book.....can't remember the title..... So, just today, I did a few searches and found The Lost Art of Steam Heating....and knew that must be the book! Even though, I might never need to work on my boiler like that again, I am so happy to get another copy of your book for two reasons....one, because it is also an entertaining read, and two, because, I'm more than happy to pay for the knowledge that I was able to get from the library for free eleven years ago. Thanks again for making it possible for an average Do-It-Yourselfer like me to successfully complete a job that even many professional HVAC techs wouldn't want to tackle!" - Eric Butler

"It must be considered the flagship of Dan's fleet. Not unlike his other books and articles. He is a master chef, mixing just the correct amounts of technical data, physics, history, and story telling. Each book is an adventure, and you will never enjoy learning as much as you will with this one." - Jim Walls

This book was not only one of the most interesting books to read but knowledgable as well.  Just by reading this book I feel more confident in selling steam boiler replacements and doing repairs.  Happier customers and less call backs. This book is worth every penny.  Thanks Dan!

Great reference February 12, 2015

I'd been thinking about getting this book for a while, and installing a new boiler last fall prompted me to do just that. Now I've found out the things I should have been doing all along regarding main vents, pressuretrol setting and radiator vent sizing. As I address these things, I look forward to a more efficient and hopefully, less expensive heating experience.
